Bea & Zeus: “They are so precious and such a joy to come home to.”

August 20, 2011

I adopted Bea and Zeus (both FIV+) just over a year ago. They are so precious and such a joy to come home to. They both have such individual personalities: Zeus from the beginning was “Mr. Lovebug” and stepped out of the carrier looking to be loved. Bea is more reserved and likes to judge things before making up her mind (even now).  She left the carrier and immediately disappeared for about half an hour. Not hearing any distress sounds from Zeus she appeared in the doorway to assess the situation.  She eventually came over to me and allowed me to pet her.  For the first few months her special love time was in the middle of the night when she loved to roam up and down my body weaving figures of eight as went.  Then she would sit down on my chest and peer into my face patting it gently to make sure I had not slept through her roaming.  I began to feel as though I had been through ten rounds with a boxer every night.  As much as I hated to do it (and the guilt I still feel), I had to ban both of them from the bedroom as I needed my sleep.  Not to worry, they got used to the routine very quickly as long as I understood breakfast was at 5 a.m.!

I want to thank all of the lovely people at KittyKind who helped me and other people to adopt the wonderful cats who are lucky enough to find your shelter.

“Toulouse is AMAZING. He is such a love bug!!”

August 20, 2011

Toulouse is AMAZING.  He is such a love bug!!  He has come so far from where he started, he’s like a whole new kitty!  He comes in and snuggles with me every morning, and really loves to get under the covers.  He also loves to lie on me (on my chest or on my feet) when I’m watching TV on the sofa.  He is super playful and will sometimes attack my feet or my leg when I’m under the covers and he’s not, so I wiggle my toes and make it a game.  He is very very chatty and will answer back when you speak to him, and sometimes will love on your legs so much while you’re walking around that it’s hard to walk!  He’s doing so great, I am so happy to have him in the family!!!  🙂  He LOVES to play with the other kitties, too, especially my other Maine Coon male, Banky.  They chase each other around and wrestle, it’s really cute.

“Lily, The Tao of a Kentucky Derby Cat”

August 20, 2011

Adopted on Kentucky Derby Day, Lily galloped into my life and quickly took hold of my heart.  Her magnificent stripes and exquisite paws are simply adorable, and she is acutely aware of her good looks.  While going into super-secret spy mode, she struts around my apartment with the stealth-like boldness of a miniature Bengal tiger.

Lily has enriched my life with atypical cat habits; for example, she loves travelling!  I have taken her to the Hamptons, Rhode Island, and Miami.  In the Hamptons, she happily hops into her sherpa carrier, and we go on shopping trips together.  Town-goers make such a fuss over her, and people have even wanted to be photographed with her.

She enjoys exploring new environments, and she has an affinity for taking catnaps in deep soaking tubs.  She watches the Today Show every morning, and she loves pop music, especially Maroon 5.  As she sits on the sofa with perfectly crossed paws, her lady-like mannerisms never fail to melt my heart.  Lily purrs easily, and her inquisitive looks and luminous eyes always make me smile.

Her charismatic personality is completely disarming, and her snuggly-cuddles have given me far more than I could ever give her.  I feel so blessed that Lily came into my life, because I have fallen in love with her tiny heartbeat.

Pippa! ” She’s such a little rascal.”

August 15, 2011

Pippa is doing very well in her new home.  When she first arrived, she was a bit hesitant but that did not last long.  Within a few hours, she had claimed the apartment as her own.  She is eating regularly and has plumped up a little – she used to leave some meals unfinished but not anymore!  Her favorite foods are Halo and Wellness.

Pippa is such a special cat – she’s friendly to anyone who has come to visit her in the apartment and as each day goes by, I think she trusts me more and more.  She even lets me hold and snuggle with her a little bit these days.

She has such a personality.  One of the best things about her is her meow – when she’s curious about something, her meow trills upwards and it sounds like she is asking a question.  It’s silly, but I answer her sometimes and I’m convinced she understands what I’m saying.  She can fall asleep anywhere – probably the most amusing place she’s fallen asleep is on my Buddha statue (see attached picture).  I jokingly tell people that she’s religious and has recently converted to Buddhism.

Another funny story: I recently bought her a little wheatgrass plant – I heard it was good for her digestion and so I wanted her to have one to nibble on.  I woke up one morning to find a blade of wheatgrass under my arm.  Oh well, I thought.  I looked around my bed and saw a few more so started picking those up as well.  Then, I looked over towards the foot of my bed, and well, what do you know, Pippa had dragged the whole darn plant on my bed and there was wheatgrass everywhere!  She’s such a little rascal.

Pippa loves to play and won’t hesitate to play in boxes, with plastic bags and the kitchen faucet.  I’ve bought her tons of toys and she loves little catnip mice and laser pointers.  However, her most favorite toy is the one she brought home from Kitty Kind – it’s a little green spring (I attached a picture of her with it).  She plays fetch with it just like a puppy – she brings it back to me and everything!  There have been a few mornings where she has woken me up at 3 a.m. to play fetch with her – it’s so cute.

I could go on and on about Pippa and I’m sure there will be plenty more fun stories to share in the future.  I’m so thankful that I have Pippa and it wouldn’t have been possible without Kitty Kind.  Thank you!

Mini (aka Holy B): “She is extremely friendly & adaptable.”

August 15, 2011

Mini is now named Holy B (Bodega).  Mini was found in Union Square Park and, although she refuses to tell me, I think she must have been a bodega cat.  She is just fantastic.  She is extremely friendly and adaptable.  She has even made friends with a dog.  I bring her to PA (a 2 hour car ride) on weekends and she is fine in the car.  I have never had a cat who traveled so well.  She loves to sit on the screened in porch and watch the birds, squirrels, chipmunks and deer.  She even saw a fox last week.

When KittyKind first rescued her, she was underweight and had a tooth abscess.  After a complete dental and vet care through KittyKind, she now only has 2 teeth, but has gained 2 pounds.  She LOVES to eat and screams for food every time someone walks in the direction of the kitchen.  So, now I have to be careful not to “pork her up”.  She is a very special kitty and I feel very lucky to have been there on the night she was rescued by Patricia.  Guess we were meant for each other.

Volunteer of the Month: August 2011

August 15, 2011

Congratulations to Todd R, our August Volunteer of the Month, Todd has opened his heart and home to some very lucky foster kitties, he works on the Saturday PM cleaning shift and also helps out with events for KK. Todd is a TV producer and graphic designer who is originally from Colorado, he moved to Harlem about 5 years ago and that’s when he decided to get a pet. Todd started with a foster cat then adopted another adult male, both sadly died last year so after they had gone, Todd felt a hole in his life. He had heard about KittyKind and thought if he could volunteer, he could do some good for the feline species. He enjoys the work he does at KK a great deal, he adds “The biggest hazard is falling in love with all the cats, but the most pleasant surprise has been the people, everyone is so nice and dedicated to our feline friends.” Todd says he is learning more every day and is so grateful for the opportunity to make their lives better, thank you Todd you do a terrific job at KittyKind, well done!

***Winners are chosen at random from all nominees.
